I read the book recently and from the point of view of a "newbie" programmer
(compared to most here) I thought it was well written and covered a nice range
of topics. Finkel seems to like languages like ML which are new to me.

"The Structure and Design of Computer Programs" book has been recommended
to me several times in the past. There is a more recent second edition, I
believe.
