Principles of Compiler Design by Aho and Ullman was what I cut my teeth on.
The first edition came out in the 70's. I believe the latest edition was in
1991 or thereabout. It's out of print, but used copies run about $10 - $15
U.S. It was a very popular college text for a long time. It's fairly
thorough.
